The Mystery of the Tribal Chieftains

In 1793, eight tribal chieftains were stricken with smallpox and buried in the St. Peter’s Churchyard in unmarked graves. You may have seen the interpretive sign in the churchyard on this subject, but do you know why they were buried here? Come hear what parish historian Libby Browne has discovered about who these indigenous leaders were and why they were in Philadelphia. Learn about another little-known but important figure, George Croghan, who is also buried here, and has a fascinating and crucial connection during the time of the French & Indian War and beyond. We will gather in the Parish House at 313 Pine St.
