Food Cupboard Closure

My dear siblings in Christ,

At the beginning of the COVID 19 pandemic we made the painful decision to close the food cupboard. We had hoped to be able to reopen it quickly, but that has not been possible and, sadly, continues not to be possible.

Our space simply does not allow us to receive, unload, organize, and distribute food in a way that protects our guests, volunteers, and staff from close contact and thus possible exposure to COVID 19.

Dawn, our mobile food cupboard manager, has been personally picking up food at Philabundance and, on behalf of St. Peter’s, delivering it to St. Gabriel’s in North East Philly and she will continue to do so. Obviously, there are still many hungry people in Philadelphia, more so than ever, and we want to be part of feeding our neighbors. To that end, we are financially supporting two ministries: Grace Cafe and Sharing Love.

Grace Cafe is a ministry of Arch Street United Methodist Church It serves a restaurant style meal to 150-200 Philadelphians every Sunday evening. Sharing Love is a new joint project of the Sunday Love Project and Sharing Excess. Sharing Love gives grocery boxes and meals to Philadelphians from its 514 South Street location. Both Grace and Sharing Love need financial support (which St. Peter’s is providing and you can too!) and volunteers. If you are not at high risk for COVID 19 and would like to volunteer I encourage you to contact whichever of the two organizations you would like to work for and go for it.

I, Sarah, Ben Bookman, and all the Food Cupboard volunteers look forward to the day we can safely resume operations. Until then, please consider supporting Sharing Love and/or Grace Cafe. And know that your Food Cupboard dollars are supporting each of these ministries.
