Dr. Darryl Roland, Music Director
Darryl Roland, DMA FGCM, is the Director of Music and Organist at Saint Peter’s Church, Philadelphia, and Artistic Director of the Chorister Academy. Previous appointments include Saint Mark’s Church and Saint James School in Philadelphia; Saint Peter’s Church, Morristown, New Jersey; and the Cathedral Church of Saint John and Cathedral Choir School of Delaware.
The Archbishop of Canterbury presented an Honorary Fellowship Diploma of the Guild of Church Musicians to Dr. Roland at the Queen’s Chapel, St. James Palace in London. The Diploma is the highest award made by the Guild of Church Musicians and was given to Dr. Roland in recognition of his work in training boys and girls in the English choral tradition. Dr. Roland was one of two Americans to first receive this honor.
Dr. Roland also received the prestigious “Coming Up Taller Award,” our nation’s highest honor bestowed on after-school programs for children and youth by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities and its partner agencies. His choir was honored by performing for the awards ceremony at the White House.
In the course of his career, Dr. Roland was the recipient of several additional awards for his choral work with children, youth and adults in the English cathedral tradition and for his outreach to urban communities, including the Bishop’s Award of the Diocese of Delaware, the AIDS Delaware Faith Community Partner Award, and the Wilmington Award.
Dr. Roland has served as a guest lecturer for regional and national conferences of the Association of Anglican Musicians and American Guild of Organists, the Annual Conference for Choirmasters and Organists at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, the Eastman School of Music, Westminster Choir College and the Virginia Theological Seminary. In addition, Dr. Roland was a Guest Conductor for the Royal School of Church Music in America Summer Training Course for Advanced Trebles at Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.
Dr. Roland earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Performer’s Certificate in Organ from the Eastman School of Music, his Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and his Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) and Bachelor of Science degree (cum laude) from Lebanon Valley College. Noted organ teachers include Russell Saunders, Roberta Gary, and Pierce Getz. Noted mentors for Royal School of Church Music training include Frank Boles, Bruce Neswick and Charles Olegar.
Matthew Boatmon, Organist and Accompanist
Mr. Boatmon is the Assistant Organist at St. Peter’s Church, Philadelphia and Accompanist for the Chorister Academy. He has won several local and national competitions, including the Arthur Poister Scholarship Competition in Syracuse, NY. Mr. Boatmon holds the Bachelor of Music degree in organ performance from the University of Evansville and the Master of Music degree in Organ Performance and the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Mr. Boatmon’s major teachers have included Mark X. Hatfield, Wilma Jensen, Douglas Reed, and Russell Saunders.
