I am delighted to announce that Dr. Darryl Roland will be the new Director of Music Ministry at St. Peter’s Church, beginning July 1, 2015.
Dr. Roland comes to us from St. Mark’s Church, Philadelphia, where he started a Choir of Boys and Girls and from St. James School, Philadelphia, where he was a music instructor. Previously, Dr. Roland was the Director of Music at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Morristown, New Jersey, the Canon Precentor of the Cathedral Church of St. John, Wilmington, Delaware, and the Artistic Director of the Cathedral Choir School of Delaware. The Cathedral Choir School, developed by Dr. Roland, provides music training, leadership development, mentoring, and academic support for children from underserved areas of Wilmington and it has become a nationally recognized model for such programs. In 2005 he received the Coming Up Taller award, our nation’s highest honor bestowed on after-school programs for children and youth by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities and its partner agencies. He has been a guest lecturer and presenter for the Anglican Association of Musicians, the American Guild of Organists, universities, and seminaries where he has discussed developing intergenerational choir programs as well as collaborative ministries. Throughout the course of his career he has focused on bringing children, youth, and adults from a wide demographic background together to grow spiritually and musically as a community.
The music search committee received over 50 applications for the position and while there were many very talented and qualified people who applied, Dr. Roland’s gifts, passions, and talents for training intergenerational choirs with a significant outreach component, were the perfect fit for our tradition of excellent choral music, our desire for congregational engagement with music, and our passion for outreach, particularly with children.
Dr. Roland writes that he is “thrilled to join Saint Peter’s parish family and to share in Saint Peter’s rich history of liturgy, music, and outreach”. He will begin here in early July. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Roland to St. Peter’s!
Please also join me in thanking the members of the music search committee for their hard work: Claire Nevin-Field, chair, Barbara Elliott, Peggy Hatch, Kate Julyan, Jonathan Miller, Lathrop Nelson, and Andrew Westerhaus.
I extend deep and heartfelt thanks to Bruce Barber for his extraordinary tenure as our interim music director. In addition to his being a superb musician, organist, choir director, and liturgist, Bruce has been an absolute joy to work with. He has been gracious, exuberant, clear, and passionate. He arrived at Saint Peter’s at an hour of need and has led us through this winter and spring with vigour and care. Bruce will be with us through the month of June. Since this Sunday, June 7, is our last day of the season with full choirs, we will give thanks and celebrate Bruce, our choirs, and all who share their musical gifts.
