SUMMARY:TNT Shrove Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Join 20s/30s at St. Peter’s to celebrate Shrove Tuesday together with a breakfast-for-dinner “brinner” potluck. Caroline Slingluff will host us in her home. Bring a favorite breakfast dish or\, in the spirit of Mardi Gras\, indulgent food or drink. Or just bring yourself! Mardi Gras is about joy before discipline\, celebration before reflection\, life before mortality. It’s the deep breath before the long\, honest exhale of Lent. Along with fellowship together\, we will spend some time in conversation and contemplation about this holy tension. Email Rev. Sarah to RSVP and to receive Caroline’s address.

SUMMARY:Repairers of the Breach: Continuing the Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Our country is at a hinge moment that calls for people of faith to stand up against all sinful systems of oppression and violence.  Many members of St. Peter’s are deeply engaged in this work. On January 18\, we heard from parishioner Kat Voit\, who leads the pro bono program at Duane Morris LLP. \nOn Sunday\, February 1\, we will continue our conversation with Kat with a guided Q&A to consider how her work is an act of discipleship. The conversation will conclude with meditation\, an invocation of the Holy Spirit to help all participants discern how we are being called into mission\, and a communal prayer over the presenter\, thanking God for their ministry and asking that they might be strengthened by God’s grace and our love as they carry it out. \nThere will be sandwiches & salad provided at 12:30 p.m. and the workshop will begin at 1. \nYou do not need to have attended the first workshop to join us on February 1. If you’d like to listen to the first workshop\, you can do so at this link and enter passcode: 5aNC?8AV.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. in Philadelphia: A Historical Visit with a Contemporary Message
DESCRIPTION:As part of our observance of Black History Month\, please join us on Sunday\, February 1\, for a special program with Arthur Sudler\, Director of the Historical Society and Archives at the African American Episcopal Church of St. Thomas\, who will present on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s visit to Philadelphia in February 1968. \nDrawing on historical records and reporting\, Sudler will share about where King went and who he met with\, including his time at the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. We will also focus on King’s messaging about systemic racism and economic injustice as well as how King’s words were covered by the media in his own time—and what each one reveals about the political and moral urgency of his witness. The program will conclude with time for us to consider what King’s visit to Philadelphia asks of us in our own moment.

SUMMARY:Going Home: Jesus & Buddha as Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Join Rev. Laurie at the Parish House Wednesday evenings during Epiphany as we explore the book “Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers” by Thich Nhat Hanh. \nExiled from Vietnam more than 30 years ago\, Thich Nhat Hanh became known as a healer with the heart\, a monk who shows us how the everyday world can both enrich and endanger our spiritual lives. \nIn this book\, Jesus and Buddha share a conversation about prayer and ritual and renewal\, and about where such concepts as resurrection and the practice of mindfulness converge. In this unique way\, Thich Nhat Hanh shows the brotherhood between Jesus and Buddha—and in the process shows how we can take their wisdom into the world with us\, to “practice in such a way that Buddha is born every moment of our daily life\, that Jesus Christ is born every moment of our daily life.” \nPlease let Rev. Laurie know if you plan to join her at the Epiphany Adult Forum: wurm@stpetersphila.org \n

SUMMARY:Epiphany Bible Study: God and the Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes God shows up as a hungry stranger.  Other times\, They come to wrestle. When Jesus is awed by someone’s faith he often points to people who do not share his religious background or ours. \nDuring the season of Epiphany\, please join Rev. Laurie and other members of St. Peter’s as we reflect on some of the many strangers in scripture who come to point out where God is busy coloring outside the lines of our faith and acting outside the boundaries of our catechism. \nAll are welcome. You do not need to do anything to prepare. Come as you are. This Morning Bible Study is on Zoom only\, not in-person! DESCRIPTION:Sages is an energetic group of retired parishioners who meet monthly on a Wednesday for lunch and discussion. Often the meeting is accompanied by a presentation from authors\, leaders in the arts\, and other people of interest. All ages are welcome to attend\, and friends are always welcome. \nOur special guest this month is Brian Gallagher\, parishioner and retired curator of Decorative Arts at The Mint Museum in Charlotte\, North Carolina. Brian will discuss Walter Scott Lenox\, the founder of the fine china company. Lenox\, born in Trenton\, New Jersey\, was instrumental in developing that city’s reputation in the late 1800s as the premier American producer of fine porcelain vases\, baskets\, tableware\, and other luxury objects in imitation of Irish Belleek porcelain. Brian’s talk derives from an exhibition he organized for the Mint that included loans from notable collections in the Trenton area. \nBring a brown bag lunch! Hope to see you!
