SUMMARY:Understanding SNAP: How You Can Be An Advocate
DESCRIPTION:The draconian changes to SNAP benefits are seriously affecting local low-income families\, veterans\, caregivers\, and the elderly. Join us at 10 a.m. Sunday\, April 19\, to understand these changes\, and to hear how two Philadelphia organizations are actively addressing the situation. \nCommunity Legal Services (clsphila.org) is a nationally recognized legal service program providing free civil legal assistance to low-income Philadelphians. Staff Attorney Tue Ho\, a St. Peter’s School alumnus (Class of 2004)  will discuss how CLS supports SNAP beneficiaries in obtaining and maintaining benefits\, and trains lay people to be advocates. Crossroads Women’s Center in Germantown\, a multiracial\, community based center for collective support and advocacy against poverty\, will discuss their SNAP Defense Group. Their goals are educating and advocating for SNAP beneficiaries through workshops and fighting for legislative changes.

SUMMARY:Bible Study
DESCRIPTION:In his book “The Resurrection of Jesus\,” author Pinchas Lapide asks\, “How was it possible that his (Jesus’) disciples\, who by no means excelled in intelligence\, eloquence\, or strength of faith\, were able to begin their victorious march of conversion only after the shattering fiasco on Golgotha—a march which put all their success before Easter completely into the shadow?…. The answer of the apostles was brief and unambiguous: the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.” \nDuring Eastertide\, the 50 days between Easter and Pentecost\, join St. Peter’s for Wednesday morning Bible study as we read what the Gospels have to say about the resurrected Jesus’ appearances to his followers which turned their doubt into belief\, their mourning into dancing\, and gave them a joy that nothing in the world could take away. \nAll are welcome. You do not need to do anything to prepare. Come as you are. This Morning Bible Study is on Zoom only\, not in-person! SUMMARY:Holy Saturday: A Lament\, A Container
DESCRIPTION:A Grief and Drawing Workshop\nClick here to register \nArtist Marie Elcin\, who has partnered with St. Peter’s for events before\, will lead a workshop exploring grief and drawing on Holy Saturday. This will be a contemplative and tender space to spend Holy Saturday\, a quiet day in the Church’s story – the day when Christ lies in the tomb\, when grief is real and hope feels hidden. In the Episcopal tradition\, we honor this in-between space\, trusting that even in silence and sorrow\, God is at work. Together\, through simple drawing practices and optional ritual release\, we will make space for lament\, memory\, and the tender hope that even in the tomb\, Love has not abandoned us. \nYou do not need any artistic skill or experience to participate. Please do not let any drawing hesitation prevent you from this holy space on this holy day. Bring an object that feels related to a lost one or a grief experience.

SUMMARY:Virtual Way of the Cross
DESCRIPTION:On the cross Jesus said: “My God\, My God\, Why have you forsaken me?” as if to say “Why is it like this?” He was one who was not separate from our own suffering. \nMany of us feel the weight of anxiety and fear as we journey through the current world. During this season of Lent\, we look to the life and teachings of Jesus. We have hung stations of the cross along our brick wall on Pine Street\, where we pair the traditional story of Jesus’ crucifixion with contemporary issues and images\, showing struggle\, resilience\, and hope. \nWe will gather on Zoom this Wednesday evening to pray these stations together with Rev. Laurie\, and invite you into that conversation and prayer. You can view the stations online here. \nJoin us on Zoom: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85002518007?pwd=gjH3NfiynVAYlnHZOHADmRgsW1etUy.1Meeting ID: 850 0251 8007; Passcode: 717275 \n

SUMMARY:Repairers of the Breach
DESCRIPTION:We will gather in the parlor after coffee hour on Sunday. There will be sandwiches and salad provided for lunch. You can grab lunch whenever you arrive\, and the workshop itself will begin at 1 p.m. \nOur country is at a hinge moment that calls for people of faith to stand up against all sinful systems of oppression and violence.  Many members of St. Peter’s are deeply engaged in this work. St. Peter’s Repairers of the Breach Workshops will feature lay ministers who will share what they are doing to confront the political  powers that diminish\, violate\, and threaten the lives of our neighbors. \nThis two-part workshop will feature parishioner Beverly Woods\, who has spent a career in both community-based organizations and municipal government. Recent examples of her projects include stabilizing communities after building collapses and utility failures; community-based COVID-19 vaccination programs; heat injury prevention programs; high quality shelter spaces for homeless families; and business development interventions to preserve services in neighborhoods. Retired in December 2024\, Beverly has pivoted to providing the same skills\, expertise\, and access to the organizations for which she volunteers\, which include Reinvestment Fund; Philly Bridge and Jawn (PB&J)\, a nascent youth- serving organization in Philadelphia’s Kensington community; Mission First Housing Group; Northern Children’s Services; and the Powelton Village Civic Association\, where she lives. \nClergy will provide Biblical and theological context\, giving participants the opportunity to discuss how the work being done is discipleship in practice.

SUMMARY:And Also Some Women
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Women in the History of St. Peter’s\, Known and Unknown \nJoin author Cordelia Biddle and historian Mike Krasulski for a two-part series exploring the rich history of women at St. Peter’s. Learn about historical women who started St. Peter’s vital outreach efforts…up to the more-recent history of our first female rector’s warden and first female priest of a major Center City church. We will also reflect on the truth that there is still a lot of information we do not have about the many amazing women who have been a part of this church since 1761. Join us for a time of learning and group discussion!

SUMMARY:Women's Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Join other women at St. Peter’s for a retreat focused on women’s history at St. Peter’s as well as our own history. Each participant is invited to think of a woman who inspires them. This can be someone you know personally or not. Someone who is living or a part of the communion of saints. Bring with you her story\, a picture of the person\, and a special item you connect with her. Our retreat will include group discussion\, a sharing of these sacred women who inspire us\, and time to just be together. Please register so we can plan our time (and snacks!) accordingly. \nClick here to register

SUMMARY:Epiphany Bible Study: God and the Stranger

You do not need to do anything to prepare. Come as you are. This Morning Bible Study is on Zoom only\, not in-person! SUMMARY:Epiphany Bible Study: God and the Stranger
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes God shows up as a hungry stranger.  Other times\, They come to wrestle. When Jesus is awed by someone’s faith he often points to people who do not share his religious background or ours. \nDuring the season of Epiphany\, please join Rev. Laurie and other members of St. Peter’s as we reflect on some of the many strangers in scripture who come to point out where God is busy coloring outside the lines of our faith and acting outside the boundaries of our catechism. \nAll are welcome. You do not need to do anything to prepare. Come as you are. This Morning Bible Study is on Zoom only\, not in-person! SUMMARY:Repairers of the Breach: Continuing the Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Our country is at a hinge moment that calls for people of faith to stand up against all sinful systems of oppression and violence.  Many members of St. Peter’s are deeply engaged in this work. On January 18\, we heard from parishioner Kat Voit\, who leads the pro bono program at Duane Morris LLP. \nOn Sunday\, February 1\, we will continue our conversation with Kat with a guided Q&A to consider how her work is an act of discipleship. The conversation will conclude with meditation\, an invocation of the Holy Spirit to help all participants discern how we are being called into mission\, and a communal prayer over the presenter\, thanking God for their ministry and asking that they might be strengthened by God’s grace and our love as they carry it out. \nThere will be sandwiches & salad provided at 12:30 p.m. and the workshop will begin at 1. \nYou do not need to have attended the first workshop to join us on February 1. If you’d like to listen to the first workshop\, you can do so at this link and enter passcode: 5aNC?8AV.

SUMMARY:Martin Luther King Jr. in Philadelphia: A Historical Visit with a Contemporary Message
DESCRIPTION:As part of our observance of Black History Month\, please join us on Sunday\, February 1\, for a special program with Arthur Sudler\, Director of the Historical Society and Archives at the African American Episcopal Church of St. Thomas\, who will present on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s visit to Philadelphia in February 1968. \nDrawing on historical records and reporting\, Sudler will share about where King went and who he met with\, including his time at the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas. We will also focus on King’s messaging about systemic racism and economic injustice as well as how King’s words were covered by the media in his own time—and what each one reveals about the political and moral urgency of his witness. The program will conclude with time for us to consider what King’s visit to Philadelphia asks of us in our own moment.

SUMMARY:Going Home: Jesus & Buddha as Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Join Rev. Laurie at the Parish House Wednesday evenings during Epiphany as we explore the book “Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers” by Thich Nhat Hanh. \nExiled from Vietnam more than 30 years ago\, Thich Nhat Hanh became known as a healer with the heart\, a monk who shows us how the everyday world can both enrich and endanger our spiritual lives. \nIn this book\, Jesus and Buddha share a conversation about prayer and ritual and renewal\, and about where such concepts as resurrection and the practice of mindfulness converge. In this unique way\, Thich Nhat Hanh shows the brotherhood between Jesus and Buddha—and in the process shows how we can take their wisdom into the world with us\, to “practice in such a way that Buddha is born every moment of our daily life\, that Jesus Christ is born every moment of our daily life.” \nPlease let Rev. Laurie know if you plan to join her at the Epiphany Adult Forum: wurm@stpetersphila.org \n
