Event Series Event Series: Summer Anti-Racism Series

Summer Anti-Racism Series

August 23, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 10:55 am

For seven weeks this summer (Sundays at 10 a.m. July 19 through August 30), we will continue our anti-racism work by focusing on listening to and amplifying the voices of black leaders in a focused way, namely under the leadership of Austin Channing Brown. We will read “I’m Still Here” by Austin Channing Brown and watch excerpts from The Next Question Show, a video web series that engages leading voices on critical topics of racial justice in America.

You can move in and out of this series (i.e. you can miss a Sunday or two), but we strongly encourage you to attend as many as possible in order to deepen our learning as well as establish trust and vulnerability in our group. We are committed to breaking up the book in small, easy to read pieces so you can show up present and ready to engage. While we ask you to watch the full TNQ Show episode before we gather, we will show a key clip to discuss together. Our goal is to make this series feasible during a usually “slow” summer time without compromising the importance of engaging this material in a committed and ongoing way.

The goal of this series is to cultivate a deeper understanding of racism from black and brown leaders; face and name our own white privilege; and, as TNQ Show puts it, to recognize how expansive the work of racial justice can be in order to inform how St. Peter’s continues to become more anti-racist.

To make sure our Zoom groups are secure and safe, we do not publicly list the Zoom Meeting IDs. To request the Meeting ID, please click here.

About I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown: In a time when nearly all institutions (schools, churches, universities, businesses) claim to value diversity in their mission statements, I’M STILL HERE is a powerful account of how and why our actions so often fall short of our words. Austin writes in breathtaking detail about her journey to self-worth and the pitfalls that kill our attempts at racial justice, in stories that bear witness to the complexity of America’s social fabric–from Black Cleveland neighborhoods to private schools in the middle-class suburbs, from prison walls to the boardrooms at majority-white organizations.

Buy her book here or select a black-owned bookstore here. Please note there is a backlog, so order as soon as you can or opt for an e- book, if possible. If you cannot get the book before our first meeting, contact Rev. Sarah.

About The Next Question Show: This video web series engages leaders, activists, creatives, and thinkers imagining how expansive racial justice can be. Each week, hosts Austin Channing Brown, Chi Chi Okwu, and Jenny Booth Potter expand imaginations with the help of incredible contributors. But it’s not just about the show. These in-depth conversations have become the groundswell for book clubs, reading homework, discussion groups, and more. The thousands of people joining the The Next Question are all a part of our TNQrew, learning and leading, every step of the way. You can watch the episodes here. We also will show excerpts in our time together.
