Holy Saturday

April 11, 2020

On the Saturday of Holy Week, everything was so still you could almost hear the earth breathe. There was nothing that could be done. Holy Saturday is a waiting day. We know all too well about waiting—about being in-between what was and what is to come. Could this day be one where we open ourselves to this stillness and waiting, with intention?

Some ways to observe Holy Saturday:

  • Fast from technology for a few hours.
  • Take a nature walk. Notice all the things that are waiting to come alive.
  • Read or listen to the traditional Holy Saturday anthem “In the midst of death” and spend some time in silence.
  • Dye Easter eggs. The wax crayon method ties in with the waiting of Holy Saturday. Get directions here.

Collect for Holy Saturday: O God, Creator of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb and rested on this holy Sabbath, so we may await with him the coming of the third day, and rise with him to newness of life; who now lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
