Candlelit Compline Service 7:00 pm
Candlelit Compline Service @ St. Peter's Church
Apr 15 @ 7:00 pm – 7:30 pm
This ancient service of plainchant and contemplative prayer provides an opportunity for silence and reflection in the quiet, candlelit space of St. Peter’s Church. Our daily lives are full of activity and multi-tasking and hurrying. Come join us for a half hour of quiet and calm. What is Compline? The service originated in southern Europe and the Middle East during the first 600 years of Christianity. The music for Compline is based on Roman chant and consists mostly of plainsong, with the incorporation of some polyphonic motets. The 30-minute service is sung seamlessly throughout with only a few spoken parts. In keeping with the earliest practices of the monastic communities, Compline is offered at the end of the day as the quietness of evening settles over the hearts and minds of those gathered. What can I expect? As you enter St. Peter’s Church, you will find a quiet and darkened church lit by candles. You’re joining other people for silence and interior reflection. Feel comfortable to make your own space and allow the ancient texts and chants to enfold you. At the close of the service, the choir retires quietly and the people depart in silence just as they arrived. Who is welcome? People from all ages and walks of life have been drawn to Compline, especially in recent decades. All are welcome—the hip and no-so-hip, religious and religion-averse. Dress comfortably. Come as you are. Allow the ancient texts and chants to enfold you, and depart renewed and comforted. Listen to a one-minute clip of St. Peter’s Compline Choir:
Walk Against Hunger 10:00 am
Walk Against Hunger @ Lincoln Financial Field
Apr 21 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
The St. Peter’s Food Cupboard provides groceries to an average of 240 families each week both at 313 Pine Street and at our Mobile Cupboard locations in North and South Philly. Some of our Cupboard’s expenses are funded by grants, but contributions from our community supporters make up a significant portion of our budget. One of two annual fundraisers each year is the Walk Against Hunger each spring. You can help support the Cupboard by walking, by donating, or by spreading word. This year’s Walk will take place on Saturday, April 21, on the track inside the Lincoln Financial Field stadium. St. Peter’s Food Cupboard will have a small team of walkers who will be walking on behalf of all of us. You can support the Food Cupboard directly by sponsoring our team and making a donation online. Simply follow the link and click the red “Donate” button to donate directly to the St. Peter’s Food Cupboard Team. If you want to do more and are interesting in joining the team of walkers, you can register online here. From this site, click the red “Join Our Team” button and follow the prompts to create an account. If you plan to walk, or need help with the registration process, please let me know! Lastly, even if you aren’t able to donate or walk, what will help the most is spreading the word. If the Food Cupboard is as important to you as it is to me, you probably already tell people about the work we do. Now is your chance to multiply the impact. You can forward the fundraising link (copied in full below) with your friends and family, share it through social media, or even pick up printed posters with the information. Every dollar counts, and if we can each raise $10 for the Food Cupboard from 5 friends, coworkers, neighbors, or other people in our lives, we will easily reach our goal by April 21st. Please help us continue...
